After years of carrying my big camera and long lens on my walks in hopes of spotting a pileated woodpecker, a pair turned up in my own backyard this summer.

i love the pileated woodpeckers! I have not yet been able to capture them in the trees, but luckily they come to our suet feeder. when my son was little we had our first pileated sighting at the feeder. My son was so excited and said, “holy crow mom, there’s a pterodactyl on the bird feeder!”
